Shelley wrote From the Homefront, a biweekly column about Coast Guard Family life that is intended to not only impart information to families, but also to engender a sense of camaraderie among Coasties. She has also consulted with the Coast Guard to better reach military spouses through online programming.
Military Family Advisory Network: Shelley is a member of the board of directors for MFAN, and she was one of 11 inaugural advisors chosen for their expertise and commitment to military families. The group works to bring support programming to those who need it, specifically in the areas of wellness, employment and education. As the director of research, Shelley was the primary investigator for MFAN's Military Family Support Programming survey in 2018. She has presented the results at the Pentagon, on Capitol Hill, and soon at the White House. A previous survey in 2014 was used to inform the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission's recommendations.
Board member, National Council of Coast Guard Spouses’ Clubs, May 2015 to May 2017. Served as the bylaw review chairperson for all spouses clubs in the United States that are affiliated with the Coast Guard.
MOAA Spouse Advisory Council: Shelley was selected to serve on the 2014-2015 Spouse Advisory Council, a group that provides feedback and a real-life policy perspective to military family life.
U.S. Department of Labor: She was invited to appear with Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez in a webinar that focused on the unique challenges of maintaining a career as a military spouse. Webinar was both broadcast live and recorded for future use in November 2014.
Blue Star Families: She started the first Coast Guard chapter for Blue Star Families in 2012. She was a the lead qualitative research for the Military Family Lifestyle Surveys in 2013 and 2014 for which she lead teams of research to code and analyze tens of thousands of written survey responses.
